Menopause

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that all women experience as they reach middle age. It marks the end of a woman's reproductive years and is defined as occurring 12 months after a woman's last menstrual period.

The years leading up to menopause are called perimenopause. During this transition time, which can last several years, women may experience irregular periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, trouble sleeping, and other symptoms as their hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decline.

The average age for menopause is 51, but it can happen anytime between the ages of 40 and 58. There are a few key things that happen during menopause:

- Declining estrogen levels - Estrogen is the main female reproductive hormone. As estrogen levels drop during perimenopause and menopause, women stop being able to get pregnant. Lower estrogen also impacts the brain, mood, skin, hair, bones, heart, and more.

- Ovulation ends - With lower estrogen, the ovaries eventually stop releasing eggs each month. No more ovulation means no more menstrual cycles.

- Menopause symptoms - Fluctuating and declining hormones causes symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, trouble sleeping, irritability, and irregular periods. Symptoms vary widely among women.

- Increased health risks - With loss of estrogen's protective effects, menopausal women are at greater risk for heart disease, osteoporosis, and other conditions. Managing these risks is key.

- Infertility - Menopause marks the end of fertility. Women cannot get pregnant after menopause naturally, although some choose pregnancy through IVF with donor eggs.

The transition through perimenopause and into menopause can last 6-8 years on average. Women who have their ovaries surgically removed go through "sudden" menopause. Smokers often experience menopause 1-2 years earlier than non-smokers.

Dealing with menopause symptoms and increased health risks can be challenging. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, as exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management can help ease this transition. Some women find relief through nutritional supplements, bioidentical hormone therapy, or other medical treatments.
