Thyroid disorder

What is thyroid disorder?

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. This gland is part of your endocrine system, which produces hormones that regulate many of your body's functions.

The main purpose of the thyroid is to produce two hormones - triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones help regulate your metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and calcium levels. When your thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones, it causes your metabolism to slow down. This is known as hypothyroidism. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, and feeling cold.

On the flip side, if your thyroid produces too many hormones, it leads to hyperthyroidism. This speeds up your metabolism, which can cause symptoms like sudden weight loss, rapid heartbeat, hand tremors, nervousness, and irritability.

Thyroid disorders are fairly common, especially in women over 60. The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. This typically leads to hypothyroidism.

Other causes include thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, radiation exposure, certain medications, and iodine deficiency. Sometimes the specific cause is unknown.

If you suspect a thyroid problem, see your doctor right away. A simple blood test can check your TSH and thyroid hormone levels. Your doctor may also examine your neck and do an ultrasound of your thyroid.

Treatment depends on the cause and type of disorder:

- Hypothyroidism is treated with synthetic thyroid hormones like levothyroxine to restore normal levels.

- Hyperthyroidism usually involves anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery to reduce thyroid hormone production.

With proper treatment, most people with thyroid disorders can manage their symptoms and lead normal lives. Work closely with an endocrinologist to get the right diagnosis and find the optimal treatment plan for your needs.
